Orange County Custodial Death for 2024

The OIR is conducting independent reviews of all custodial deaths that occurred in 2024. Below are reports from the Orange County District Attorney's Office and the Office of Independent Review. Some of reports have been completed while other are still pending and under review.

Custodial Death – January 5, 2024

On Friday, January 5, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Intake Release Center in Module K died at Orange County Global Medical Center, Santa Ana. The decedent is a 28-year-old Hispanic female who was sentenced and awaiting to be released from custody at the end of the month. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

Custodial Death – January 14, 2024

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, an inmate was remanded into Orange County Sheriff’s custody via bedside arraignment at the Orange County Global Medical Center. On Sunday, January 14, 2024, the inmate died while still receiving medical care and prior to being housed in the Orange County Jail. The decedent is a 34-year-old white male who was awaiting trial. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

Custodial Death – January 26, 2024

On Friday, January 26, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Central Men’s Jail in Module C died while inside custody. The decedent is a 57-year-old Hispanic male who was awaiting trial. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

On Monday, February 5, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Central Men’s Jail in Module D died at the Orange County Global Medical Center, Santa Ana. The decedent was a 41-year-old white male who was awaiting arraignment. The decedent's manner and mode of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

On Friday, March 8, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Theo Lacy Facility in Module Q died while inside custody. The decedent is a 46-year-old white male who was awaiting to be transferred to Riverside County Sheriff’s custody. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

On Monday, March 11, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Central Men’s Jail in Module B died at the Orange County Global Medical Center, Santa Ana. The decedent was a 36-year-old Hispanic male who was awaiting trial. The decedent's manner and mode of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.

The decedent is a 51-year-old Hispanic male who was awaiting trial. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, an Orange County Jail inmate housed at the Intake Release Center, and was completing the booking process, died at Orange County Global Medical Center, Santa Ana. The decedent is a 42-year-old white male who was awaiting transfer to Riverside County Sheriff’s custody. The decedent's manner and means of death are awaiting final determination by the Orange County Coroner. The OIR is in the process of conducting an independent review of the custodial death of the inmate.
